My stint as a volunteer, wannabe chef, and general wackiferous one. Life in the kingdom is never usual.

Over dinner tonight, some of the ladies and I were chatting about men. It seems that many women here chose work or family. Few that I've seen attempt both. As a result, I think there is a higher percentage of single women over 30 in Thailand compared to Smalltown, USA. Of the five women at the table, only one was dating/married. Khun E. told me about the love of her life, a famous singer. She said he has five wives.

Come again?

Five wives?

Wait, my Thai is horrible. One more time?

Five wives.

Yeah, and that's perfectly ok . . . for a man. When I asked if a woman could have more than one husband, all chattering halted and 4 deer-in-the-headlight faces turned my direction in shock. Oy. So, my question is this: Why the heck not?
I keep hearing and reading that the conservative crowd is ridiculous, clinging to their (sometimes) Biblical model of marriage. Some smart ass remarks I've heard:

Leviticus 25: 44 states that I may possess
slaves, both male and female, provided they are
purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine
claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not
Canadians.

A friend of mine feels that even though eating
shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11: 10, it is a
lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree.
Can you settle this?

I know from Lev. 11: 6-8 that touching the skin
of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play
football if I wear gloves?

Clever. Mark Twain could be Satan if I took him out of context. All those white suits.

Shouldn't any two people who love eachother be able to make a covenant of marriage? Um...so, if a man loves 15-women, what about that? Shouldn't he be able to express that love? Who do The Powers That Be think they are refusing to sanction love?

Hmmm... Interesting questions, but so are these:
Where are the boundaries, people?? Is nothing sacred? Is chaos really freedom? Are laws gifts or suffocation?

Laws are suffocation. I frankly don't need to protect myself from myself, does that make sense? Frankly I disagree with having 15 wives, I can't even handle the one that I have let alone 15 of them. But I am not against you having 15 of them if that's what you want/can handle it/afford etc.

Likewise if you want to spend your days in a drug induced haze, hey thats allright with me too, but when your out on the streets cause you lost your job/home/family and everything else don't come looking to me for help either.

We should all be responsible for oursleves, some laws we need, some just take away our freedoms and arent apprecaited, by many/most.
